Origin of the project
We believe that crypto-art is revolutionising the art world as we know it.
This art movement has emerged from the non-places of the digital world, breaking with all traditional conventions. While classical art clings to its rigid structures – galleries, fairs, auction houses – crypto-art presents itself as an underground explosion of creativity, embracing its digital and social essence. Here, artists from all corners of the globe connect through the blockchain, challenging the rules of conventional art and forming interconnected crypto-art communities.
NFT Canarias emerges in the midst of this new scenario. A group of artists, driven by a shared vision and a deep sense of humility, have decided to put the Canary Islands on the global crypto-art map.
Founding team
Aída Piñango
A painter and fashion designer born in Caracas, Venezuela. Trained at the Escuela de Artes Visuales ‘Cristóbal Rojas’ and the Universidad Central de Venezuela, Aída uses the decomposition/composition of forms in her art, inviting the viewer to discover and reflect. Miguel has worked in programming languages such as Cobol, Fortran, VisualBasic and ASP, and combines his love of layout and photography with art and technology. Through his CollectiMiner profile, he creates generative art NFTs using code, exploring themes of order, chaos and identity.
Charlie Five aka Chr5
Digital artist, graphic designer and writer based in Spain. His work explores the complexity of information, the contradiction between rationality and irrationality, and African symbolism in Canarian art. As creator and director of NFT Canarias, Charlie passionately leads this project that seeks to transform art in the age of decentralisation.
Our history
Our first action was to gather a group of local artists linked to crypto-art at the end of 2021. Charlie Five, founding artist of Nft Canarias took this first step by gathering artists such as NftGarden, Bénelo García and Aída Piñango around the project. We created the NFTCanarias 2022 project, a virtual exhibition that in addition to showing works, offered talks by David Cruz and Celestino Celso about crypto-art and the rich tradition of contemporary art in the Canary Islands.
We then took NFTCanarias beyond our borders and invited artists from the African continent, with an innovative proposal: CanAfrica 2022 Exhibition where Canarian and African artists shared and exhibited their work in a virtual environment. This exhibition was curated by guest photographer Djibril Drame and Charlie Five. Artists from three countries participated: Nigeria, Senegal and Spain. Among them Pacal Okafor, Demba Ly, Nazquiat, Mercedes Cas, Albi and many others.
In the year 2023, we were invited by Celestino Celso to make the first exhibition of Phygital cryptoart in the Canary Islands at the IEHCAN – Instituto de Estudios Hispánicos de Canarias. In that exhibition we used our own monitors, organised a series of lectures and occupied the space for a month. The first five crypto-artists of nftcanarias participated and the work of other artists of the collective such as Maitreya, Néstor Cano and Mercades Cas was projected.
In this 2024 we start a more ambitious project called 52 WEEKS ARTISTS DROP, where we invite the community of Latin American and European artists, not only from the Canary Islands, in an event where every week of the year we present a piece by an artist, creating a global community of artists and crypto-artists.
But this is just the beginning; it is the seed of a future that we want to cultivate in our community, opening doors for creators, collectors, critics and gallery owners in this new era of decentralisation.
